Hays City Sportsmen's Club celebrated its 30th anniversary with a registered trap shoot Sept. 15 and 16. The club was established in 1977 and originated out of Plainville, where it was primarily a trapshooting club. After moving to Hays, the club had pistol and silhouette shoots. These events would draw shooters from all over the state of Kansas. In the early 1980s, two trap fields were added for the shotgun shooters, and a 12-by-38-foot trailer house was purchased for the clubhouse. The club would have two trap leagues a year, one in the spring and one in the fall, usually consisting of four to eight teams per league. A team consisted of five shooters. In the mid 1980s, a skeet field was added to the range along with additional trap fields. As the years went on, registered trap shoots were held through the Amateur Trapshooting Association.
